Balatonfüred is the paving material of choice has taken steps to reduce the effects of climate change
The Rural Development Program provides support to approximately HUF 106 billion in 12 call the Ministry of Agriculture for Forest Management, which play a key role in afforestation in - said Minister of State for Small Nicholas Rural Development, the Ministry of Agriculture, Balatonfüred municipality and the Bakonyerdő Ltd. joint tree-planting action on Wednesday Balaton..
The state secretary highlighted that the most important role in the afforestation of the country will be played by those private forest farmers who can get planting support under the new conditions of the Rural Development program. He also mentioned that local governments, civil organizations, and associations also have the opportunity to participate in the national afforestation program of the Ministry of Agriculture. For them, a call for tenders will be published in the near future with a budget of about HUF 500 million, for example, for tree-planting streets and public parks, he added.
In his speech, Miklós Kis emphasized that trees and forests play a decisive role in the environmental condition of the country, the importance of which has increased due to climate change. With this in mind, the Ministry of Agriculture has developed a tree-planting program, the motto of which is: "He who plants a tree trusts in the future". The purpose of this is to create an encouraging and supportive legal environment that can increase the wooded areas of the country with the cooperation of local governments, private individuals, private forest managers, and various state actors.
He also spoke about the fact that in the planting season, which is just starting, the state forestry farms will plant more than 550 hectares of new forest in their own areas, which has already partially started and will last until the end of the growing season, until April 2020. For this, 2 million tree seedlings and nearly one hundred tons of acorns are used.
From the increased support, they also hope to be able to provide an alternative to those farmers who grow crops or fruits in the field and this does not provide them with sufficient income, he said. "According to our plans, as a result of the investments for the development of the forest areas and the improvement of the viability of the forest areas, a total of about 20 thousand hectares of forest and 5 hectares of woody plantations for industrial purposes will be planted," he concluded. He drew attention to the fact that the campaign is not only about planting. "The people living in the settlement can help the program if they take care of the planted trees, take care of them, and feel that they are their own, since these trees mostly serve the local people with their many positive effects," he said.
István Bóka (Fidesz-KDNP), the mayor of Balatonfüred, highlighted in his speech that his city, which has a long tradition of planting trees, was happy to join the campaign of the Ministry of Agriculture. He recalled that Rabindranáth Tagore, a Nobel Prize-winning Hindu poet, planted a tree on the promenade in Füred, which was later named after him, in memory of his recovery. "He didn't even think what kind of tradition he started with this, which became a defining part of local culture, and to which we can also thank many events and literary works," he added.
The mayor also reported that Balatonfüred had also taken steps to reduce the effects of climate change by choosing the material for the pavements. In addition, the city created a regulation that obliges investors to replace trees if trees are cut down or trees die as a result of their actions. With an action launched this year, the municipality is distributing 200 tree seedlings to local residents. The goal is for the people of Füred to plant trees in their own gardens, and not just plant thujas and evergreens. The municipality is also doing its best to tree its roads and public spaces, setting a good example - said István Bóka.
In Wednesday's tree planting event in Balatonfüred, after the festive program, representatives of the municipality, the agricultural ministry and Bakonyerdő Zrt. jointly planted three saplings with the participation of local elementary and high school students.
