China's renewed investment at the Hotel Balaton in Zalaegerszeg
Chinese investors bought and converted the former Hotel Balaton in Zalaegerszeg into a four-star hotel; The HUF 1 billion investment is expected to be completed in the autumn, the mayor of the city said during a tour of the construction site on Friday.Zoltán Balaicz (Fidesz-KDNP) recalled that the hotel in the city center opened its doors in 1981, in 2000 it was expanded with a conference room, and in 2004 with an oriental-style wellness area. Due to the problems of the group of companies that owned the complex, which had been in private hands all along, the hotel was taken over by a bank in 2010, and has been closed ever since.
A Chinese family bought the building in 2017, which will be converted into a four-star hotel in the fall, the mayor said in the presence of representatives of the investors.
He added that there is a great demand for the HUF one billion investment, realized entirely from private capital, in Zalaegerszeg due to the vehicle industry test track under construction and other investments. The 64-room hotel, which will be opened under the name Willis Hotel, will have a conference room in addition to the wellness center.
László Vigh, the Fidesz parliamentary representative of the region, ministerial commissioner of the test track, spoke about the fact that event tourism plays an increasingly important role in tourism. In the case of Zalaegerszeg, due to the current investments, it is particularly important to have a suitable place for organizing conferences for hundreds of people, which this private investment will also make possible.
István Czigány, the managing director of the designer Zala Art Építéz Iroda, said during the tour: they reconsidered the building with the creator of the original plans, but they did not touch the floor plan itself. The former balconies of the hotel, which can be considered the "closing element" of downtown Zalaegerszeg, have been incorporated, and complete interior and exterior modernization is being carried out in order to create a hotel building that meets today's needs in all respects.
