Tourism development can begin in the spring of Sio
In the spring, the implementation of planned tourism developments on the Tolna county section of the Sió will begin, and the National Water Directorate General (OVF) will also carry out several restoration works on the river.
The Tolna County Self-Government implements tourism developments along the 85-kilometer section of the river from Ozora to Szekszárd within the framework of three projects, with the support of more than one billion forints from the Territorial and Urban Development Operative Program. As part of the projects, stops, reception stations, service points, a water tourism center and bicycle paths are being built.
The construction of the water stations can start first, the public procurement procedure for which has already been completed, Balázs Naszvadi, head of the territorial development department of the Tolna County Self-Government Office, told MTI.
He added that the construction and designation of bicycle paths will also begin this year, as well as the construction of the water tour center in Szekszárd, and the complete completion of the Sió project is expected by the start of the 2020 tourist season.
In the first phase, disembarkation points consisting of floating piers and stairs will be created in Ozora, Simontornya, Pálfá, Sárszentlőrinc, Borjád, Úzd, Kölesd, Medina, Harc, Sióagárd and Szekszárd, stops will be built in Harc, Kölesd,
Sárszentlőrincen, Pálfá, Simontornya. Existing buildings in Medina and Sióagárd are being converted into tourist facilities.
In the second stage, 62 kilometers of cycle paths will be created next to the Sió; of this, a new road will be built on the embankment of the river, eight kilometers from Szekszárd and Harc, and a bicycle path will be designated on road 6317 from Harc to Simontornya. In the third phase, a tourist base equipped with bicycles, kayaks, canoes, and fitness equipment will be built in Sión in Szekszárd.
According to the municipality's application submitted to TOP, the expected daily traffic of the bicycle paths will be 1,000-2,000 cyclists. The head of the department noted: by the time the services are fully developed, according to their expectations, Sió Mente will be a popular tourist destination. The project also involved businesses that, in addition to bicycle, water and boot tourism, also want to create the possibility of motorized water transport, on which additional services can be built. They also expect that a part of the cycling tourism audience currently taking place on the Danube embankment will defect to Sió, he added.
The river carried the OVF is part of a multi-intervention, until 2020, the project to modernize the drainage system of the lake.
