Siofok nine-goal advantage in the quarter-finals
Defending champion Siófok KC won 38-29 in the first match of the quarterfinals of the women's handball EHF Cup at the home of Turkish champion Kastamonu Belediyesi GSK on Sunday.
Result, Quarterfinals, Match 1:
Kastamonu Belediyesi GSK (Turkish) -Siófok KC 29-38 (12-24)Three years ago and last fall, Kastamonu saw off Vác in the third round of the qualifiers, and Debrecen in the group stage at the beginning of February in the EHF Cup.
Only the injured Csilla Mazák-Németh was missing from the visitors' squad for Sunday's match.
In the beginning, neither side's defense was adequate, five goals were scored in seven minutes. In the continuation, the Turks could not keep up with their better rivals, they scored only after every second Siófok goal, so based on the saves of Melinda Szikora, the guests already led 14-8 in the 16th minute.
Kastamonu's players couldn't regroup, so the Siófok team produced a 7-0 run in eight minutes with quick counter-actions, leading 24-12 at the break.
At the beginning of the second half, the defending champion made more and more mistakes, and first with a 4-1 run, then with a 5-1 run, the home team reduced their deficit, with their goalkeeping performance improving by leaps and bounds. Although Siófok lost the second half of the low-quality match with three goals, with its nine-goal success it finally made next Saturday's rematch a formality.
The winner of the duel will meet the Russian HK Lada Toljatti or the Danish Odense HB team in the semi-finals.
